The Deep or Hidden Web and Legal Research
Deep Web Research 2008

In the last several years, some of the more comprehensive search engines have written algorithms to search the deeper portions of the world wide web by attempting to find files such as .pdf, .doc, .xls, ppt, .ps and others. These files are predominately used by businesses to communicate their information within their organization or to disseminate information to the external world from their organization. Searching for this information using deeper search techniques and the latest algorithms allows researchers to obtain a vast amount of corporate information that was previously unavailable or inaccessible.
The article contains an extensive resource listing.

At present, governmental agencies, non-profits, researchers and academics are putting terabytes of valuable, unique and freely accessible data onto the Internet. However, these informational nuggets, some found only on the Web, are being placed not on fixed Web pages, but in databases. This gives rise to the paradox that even as more free and high-quality legal information is available online, it's becoming harder to find.
Mining the Deep Web
by Ted Tjaden on January 11th, 2006 <http://www.slaw.ca/2006/01/11/mining-the-deep-web/>
When teaching students or lawyers about legal research on the Internet, I usually try to also explain the concept of the "deep" or "invisible" web – the large number of webpages that are not indexed by major search engines.
Deep Web and Specialized Search: A Directory <http://intraspec.ca/specialized-search.php>
On this page...
- Hardware and How-To
- Business and Finance
- Computer Support
- Comparison Shopping
- Government and Public Record
- Invisible or Deep Web
- Material Safety Data Sheets
- Pesticides and Toxicology
- Reference
There are many sources of information that are difficult to access using the major search engines, because those engines cannot get past the forms used to drill down in these otherwise available databases. In addition, there are now many specialized engines which catalogue information of a particular type with greater efficiency than the major search engines, thus affording the researcher results that require less sorting.
This Directory serves as a preliminary compilation of both, for purposes of personal use. Links to other important references are also presented.
Legal, Factual and Other Internet Sites for Attorneys and Others
By Timothy L. Coggins*
<http://law.richmond.edu/jolt/links.asp>
This listing of Internet sites for legal, factual, and other research presents a variety of sources for attorneys, law students, librarians, and others who use the Web. Initially developed for an Advanced Legal Research course and a continuing education session for legal assistants, the listing includes sites for primary authorities, both federal and state, as well as URLs for other types of information such as names of possible expert witnesses and biographical and background information (including social security numbers in some instances) about individuals.
Topics Discussed in this Article:
Part I: Search Engines
Part II: Comprehensive or Portal Research Sites
Part III: Online Sites for Legislative and Administrative Materials
Part IV: Case Law Sites
Part V: Sites for Virginia-Related Legal and Other Materials

Citation of Legal and Non-Legal Electronic Database Information
Candace Elliott Person, RN, JD <http://www.michbar.org/publications/citation.cfm>
In the past four years, online legal and non-legal information has erupted on the many databases [3] which make up the Internet.[4] Information from around the world is now readily available at our fingertips. With enhanced access to worldwide networks of data bases, citation problems have also emerged. What format should we use to cite online cases and other materials? Various legal and other professional organizations have been addressing these questions for several years.[5] Most of the proposed formats are still in the draft stages. This is probably because the online electronic database networks are changing daily, and new questions arise almost as quickly.
While the various organizations continue to refine recommendations for citation systems that will not totally disrupt the way we do business today, we need some kind of guidelines to cite the sources that many of us are already using. This paper provides interim guidelines for citation of legal and non-legal sources. It is a combination of suggestions from legal and non-legal professional writing groups, applied to the legal context. The guidelines are basic and general in nature, and can be applied to the Michigan Citation System, the BLUEBOOK format, or others used by attorneys. But first, a bit of history to understand the context in which these guidelines are proposed.

Beyond Google
The Web is so full of useful info that no search engine can find it all. But a multitude of specialty sites deliver shopping advice, reference databases, leisure-time ideas, and more--fast.

As heretical as this may seem to some PC users, Google doesn't know it all. Sure, the paragon of search engines deftly handles most of our search requests. But just as you wouldn't drive miles past the local grocery store to a cavernous warehouse club to buy a dozen eggs, you don't want to slog through pages of search results from Google or another search engine every time you need a bit of information.
Better to rely on a cadre of specialized sites that will swiftly retrieve the nuggets you're looking for. Here are the best data resources on the Web, from the latest business news sites to the most useful addresses for hearth and home.

All of this is to suggest that libraries and librarians are changing both what they do and how they do it. Even so, the traditional role of reference is unlikely to simply disappear. People will still depend on librarians -- whatever their titles -- to assist in narrowing down a search query and identifying reputable sources.
Do Web search engines suppress controversy?
by Susan L. Gerhart
First Monday
Editorial history
Paper received 17 November 2003; accepted 20 December 2003. <http://www.firstmonday.org/ISSUES/issue9_1/gerhart/index.html>
Web behavior depends upon three interlocking communities: (1) authors whose Web pages link to other pages; (2) search engines indexing and ranking those pages; and (3) information seekers whose queries and surfing reward authors and support search engines. Systematic suppression of controversial topics would indicate a flaw in the Web's ideology of openness and informativeness. This paper explores search engines' bias by asking: Is a specific well-known controversy revealed in a simple search? Experimental topics include: distance learning, Albert Einstein, St. John's Wort, female astronauts, and Belize. The experiments suggest simple queries tend to overly present the "sunny side" of these topics, with minimal controversy. A more "Objective Web" is analyzed where: (a) Web page authors adopt research citation practices; (b) search engines balance organizational and analytic content; and, (c) searchers practice more wary multi-searching.

Context and Legal Research*
Barbara Bintliff <http://www.aallnet.org/products/pub_llj_v99n02/2007–15.pdf>
Professor Bintliff explores the changing context of legal research results occasioned
by the shift from the defined and hierarchical legal research world of digests and print resources to the almost unlimited information available electronically.
Basic communication theory is used to understand how the changes
affect our shared context.
